Get Involved

Here's how you can participate and lend your support to Upward Bound at MSU — as a parent, tutor, summer instructor or donor.

  • Parents

UB Parents are an integral part of the program in terms of supporting, encouraging, and advancing their student.

What can parents do to assist their Upward Bound students?

Encourage your student to keep good attendance. Send a note, call, or email us when an absence is necessary. Make sure your student attends another tutorial when absent from UB. Encourage your student to be appreciative and take full advantage of the opportunities the program provides.

  • Tutoring

Upward Bound offers several employment opportunities to college students, Upward Bound alumni, and the broader community. Some positions are for the academic year and others are for the summer. Some summer positions are only available for one week during which Upward Bound students live on campus (this takes place in July of every summer).

Upward Bound is always accepting applications from College Students for Tutoring. Depending on the time of year, tutoring may include:

    • Assisting instructors or lead instruction.
    • Gathering data for reports.
    • Assisting with and mentor students.

If you are interested in applying for a tutoring position, please fill out the Tutor application available here

  • Community Giving

Upward Bound program celebrates fifty years of being part of the MSU community. Since 1966, we have helped graduate over 4,000 talented first-generation students and over 97% entered a post-secondary educational institution. We know that MSU’s Upward Bound means a lot to you and our community and we hope to be able to help at least another 4,000 youth in the next fifty years!

Please consider making a gift to MSU’s Upward Bound today. As you can imagine, any amount goes a long way! You can make your tax-deductible gift by following this link.

The money will be used for:

    Partaking in college preparatory activities
    Study abroad experiences
    Programmatic needs
    Life skills development
Initiatives that develop academic and leadership skills

Upward Bound would like to thank Dr. and Mrs. Yokoyama for their generous gift that will be used for years to come to aid the success of the program and its students.
